Smoothwater Wilderness Lodge

Smoothwater is a frontcountry lodge with backcountry trails – an original and exciting place for your nature vacation in Canada. World travelers have dubbed us guesthouse, inn, wilderness lodge, nature retreat, and B&B. But Smoothwater is also the home of the Colman-Boyes family. We promise that in a very short time (especially after you eat at our table), you too will feel at home with us in the Temagami wilderness.

Regional foods, lodge-based wilderness adventures and canoe trip outfitting are our passions. We’re an authentic place for you to experience the people, the land and the stories of northeastern Ontario, Temagami.

Explore James Lake
Slip into a canoe or cross-country skis and explore the mysteries of nature in our small ‘backyard’ lake. Rich in diversity, you’ll see beaver, otter and moose. You’ll hear loons, frogs and songbirds. Wolf and lynx tracks are always visible through the winter.

For living history, one end of James lake has 1912 ruins of a fools’ gold mine. At the other end, is a hint of a logging camp from the 1920s.

There are no motorboats on James lake.

Explore Smoothwater Wilderness Trails
Over 45 km of wilderness trails await you from your door — after a good breakfast of course. Some say (and we agree), these are the some of the best cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails in the world.

No recreational snowmobiles are allowed.

Spring and fall offer secluded hiking through diverse forests, including old growth maple and yellow birchwhich were tapped for syrup by the Temagami First Nations.

The Blue Gathering Hall
Overlooking James lake is our Gathering Hall, a big-windowed space drenched in the colour blue. With its red Heintzman piano, library, board games and crafts, it has a relaxing effect on guests. Small meetings and intimate weddings are hosted here, as well as house concerts, lectures, yoga retreats, painting classes and school programs.

Rustic Backcountry Cabins
Two rustic, backcountry cabins are tucked away on the wilderness trail system. Suitable for self-catered winter cross-country ski and snowshoe adventures, they are about 6 km from the Smoothwater wilderness lodge.

Walk the Labyrinth
At the forest edge you’ll find our labyrinth. Unlike a maze, a labyrinth has a one-way, meandering path that encourages meditation, reflection and even prayer. The labyrinth is always ‘open’ and is special to walk (or snowshoe) anytime – even in the moonlight.

Sauna
Our lakeside, wood-burning sauna is a natural, healthy remedy for relieving stress and sore muscles. Enjoy the intense heat after a day’s activity, with a jump in the lake or a roll in the snow.

Campfires
Smoothwater has two firepits that are wonderful for singing around the campfire, storytelling and roasting marshmallows.
