Temagami Park Permits

How do Temagami Backcountry Park Permits work?

In 2025, Ontario Parks made a significant change to the booking process for Temagami’s backcountry parks. Where before, campers would purchase a general “registration” (not a reservation) and campsites were available on a first-come, first-served basis, campers must now designate specific zones for each night of their stay within park boundaries. These zones are called “locations” on the booking form.

Guide to booking park permits

*Make sure you have created an Ontario Parks account before you start! This will save you from having to leave your reservation to create one.

• Go to the Ontario Parks reservation website: ontarioparks.reservations.ca

• Select Backcountry tab (third tab to the right).

• Select Paddling option.

• Select Temagami Cluster from Park dropdown list.

• Enter arrival date and party size.

• Select Access Point from dropdown list. The most common access points for our clients are:

  • Red Squirrel Rd (for Ferguson Bay/Sandy Inlet access to Diamond-Obabika, Canton Lakes, Maple Mountain, and Trout Stream routes)

  • Chance Lake (for Gamble Lake access to Lady Evelyn River route)

  • Montreal River (for access to Smoothwater Lake, Ishpatina Ridge, and Sturgeon River routes)

  • Mowat Landing (for access to Maple Mountain or Trout Streams routes)

  • Lake Temagami Access Rd (for access to the Diamond-Obabika route)

• Click Search. A “Build your stay” section will appear below where you will enter the details of your trip.

• Enter the number of nights you plan to spend at your first location. Select the location from the Available booking locations dropdown menu. It is helpful to reference the map of Temagami Cluster park zones (or “locations”) located further down the page. For nights spent outside of park boundaries, select “Out of Park/Crown Land”.

You will not be able to add additional locations until you click the Add to stay button, which will reveal a new date and location selector below.

• When you have added all the relevant nights & locations of your stay, click Reserve.

Do I need a permit?

If you’re paddling one of Temagami’s Crown land canoe routes, no permit is required.

You must buy a permit if you plan to stay overnight in one of Temagami’s backcountry provincial parks.

Not sure whether your route is on park land or Crown land? You can get a rough idea of where parks are from this map. Contact us for a more detailed breakdown of the area.

Permits can be booked up to five months in advance of your arrival.

How much do permits cost?

Temagami backcountry permits have recently moved from a per person/night model to a per campsite/night model. A campsite is $32.50/night (2025 price).

How many people are allowed on a permit?
